Whilst the rest of the world has and is now enjoying the new iPhone 4S from Apple, poor China are still waiting for the handset to officially become available to buy. Bringing with it new features such as an 8 megapixel camera, iOS 5, Siri Voice Recognition and so on, China iPhone fans are having to twiddle their thumbs， simply because it is rather difficult for Apple’s best iPhone yet to obtain the relevant approvals from the authorities.

Realistically speaking, the iPhone 4S would no longer be able to make it to China before the calendar year greets 2012, even if the vaunted smartphone were to pick up approval today. Chances are, Apple and China Unicom will still need to spend some time and money to run pre-launch promotions, although I am not quite sure whether that is really necessary at all since it is the iPhone 4S that we are talking about here, after all.

Anyway, Tencent Tech is reporting that China Unicom told them the phone would officially hit the Chinese market sometime in January. Of course, other places are reporting the phone could see store shelves as early as before Christmas. That seems pretty unlikely to us, for sure, if iPhone 4S doesn't land China before Christmas, then no later than Jan 23, the Chinese Spring Festival. Or it maybe a great loss for Apple, China Unicom and the iPhone 4S fans.

Jailbreak hack enables Siri on iPhone 4, 4th-gen iPod touch

Hackers have succeeded in bringing a limited port of Apple's new Siri voice assistant feature onto "jailbroken" versions of the iPhone 4 and the fourth-generation iPod touch, though they have noted that the workaround is not ready for a public release.

Steve Troughton-Smith and Grant Paul  publicized the hack via Twitter late Saturday. The tweak requires that devices first undergo a jailbreak, the procedure for hacking an iPhone to run unauthorized code and applications.

The two hackers provided screenshots and a video (below) of their success, while reporting that the service was "literally just as fast" on the iPhone 4 as the iPhone 4S. According to Paul, UI on the iPod touch felt "slightly slower," though the actual Siri was "pretty much identical."

Troughton-Smith said that he had boiled the entire hack down to "one line of code" plus "a *ton* of filesystem changes." He also promised that all details of the workaround would be revealed once he confirmed "it works, doesn't break other things and is safe," probably after the release of an iPhone 4S jailbreak. When asked whether a release date had been set, he said no, adding that doing so would "anger the hive."

Apple unveiled Siri earlier in October, announcing the feature as an exclusive to the iPhone 4S. In April 2010, it was reported that the Cupertino, Calif., company had acquired the developer of the original Siri app, possibly for as much as $200 million.

Given that initial reviews of the iPhone 4S have pointed to Siri as a main draw and "standout feature" of the device, Apple could move quickly to block the workaround from hackers. This could potentially lead to a cat-and-mouse game similar to its continued efforts to prevent jailbreaking and unlocking.

Analysts: 'iPad 3' display presents a challenge

Making tablets with a very-high-resolution display in large volumes is posing a challenge for Apple, according to analysts and an Asia-based report.

Two analysts contacted by CNET today said that they don't expect a new version of the iPad, dubbed the iPad 3, until next year because of high-resolution display supply constraints. And a report today from Digitimes made similar claims.

"We have heard that panel makers have had trouble manufacturing panels at efficient yields with the resolutions that Apple is requesting," said Richard Shim, an analyst at DisplaySearch. "There's even been discussion of lowering the resolution to get better yields."

A 9.7-inch tablet display with 2,048x1,536 resolution "has been under development for some time," Rhoda Alexander, an analyst at IHS iSuppli, said in reply to an e-mail query. Alexander said iSuppli has built its projections on a 2012 introduction of an iPad with this kind of very high-resolution display. Apple's iPad 2, announced back in March, has a 9.7-inch display with a resolution of 1,024x768.

Alexander's conclusion is that the iPad 3 will not appear before the first quarter of 2012 because the "higher performance panels present a number of challenges...the panel yields are likely to be substantially lower than that of the iPad 2's panel. It makes no sense for Apple to introduce a supply constrained product in its heaviest demand quarter (third quarter) of the year," Alexander said.

Alexander continued. "The backlight issue presents a substantial challenge as well, both in integrating the higher performance requirements within the form factor requirements and managing the additional power requirements."

The issues described above affect all tablet suppliers, forcing other makers to delay their plans for models with higher resolutions displays too, according to the report in Digitimes.

Earlier this month, Ashok Kumar, an analyst at Rodman & Renshaw, said that Apple had begun production on an incremental upgrade for the iPad 2--and iPad 2 "Premium" for professionals. This is expected to also have a high-resolution screen. It is still possible that Apple brings out a professional model this year because the necessary production volumes for a high-end version of the iPad 2 would be low, Kumar said today.

Comments:

Such a high resolution display does not seem possible at this time. Firstly, a GPU has to have a lot of power to run such a high resolution display. High power consumption on a mobile device isn't a good mix. Secondly, the cost of such a display would be incredibly high - Probably more than the cheapest iPad currently in production. And thirdly, I think that such a display would have been seen first in other devices, such as professional monitors, graphics/drawing tablets, or otherwise. Most computers/laptops top out at 1080p, and anyone who uses a resolution higher than that is an enthusiast, or a professional.

There are just too many reasons why I think an iPad with a retina display would not be possible within a year. 3 years, maybe, but not not now.

My opinion:

I don't think the 2,048x1,536 resolution is must-have or necessary, but if there's no technical revolution, there is no Apple. Jobs have the ability to make impossible possible. Let's wait and see.

Rumors have the iPhone 5 being released in September and then the iPad 3 right around Thanksgiving. The day after Thanksgiving, known as Black Friday and the unofficial starting day of the holiday shopping season, is rumored to be a possible release date for the iPad 3. The iPhone 5 is rumored to have several major changes in the design. This of course is unconfirmed by Apple at this time. The iPad 3 is of course rumored to have a new high definition display, and possibly a Retina Display. Other improvements could include a faster processor and a much needed improved camera.

What about the iPad 2 HD?

The iPad 2 HD has also been rumored to be the next tablet from iPad, putting the iPad 3 on hold until 2012. At this point the China Times doesn’t reference which of the models are going to be released. If the iPad 2 HD is going to be the next release you can expect to see fewer improvements then with a release of an entirely new model. The iPad 2 HD, if real, is expected to be an upgrade to the display. However the rest of the design is to remain the same or very similar to the current iPad 2. This is similar to what Apple has done with phone releases in recent history.

The newest models could in fact be announced much sooner then this dates. If the release date for the iPad 3 is in fact Black Friday then the announcement could come much earlier. A possible roll out for the iPhone 5 and the iPad 3 could occur at the same time with the release of the iOS 5. This of course has been mentioned as a possibility it now seems like it may occur.

The official results are in: Apple has taken the crown as the world's largest smartphone maker for raw shipments, surpassing both Nokia and Samsung to capture 20.3 percent of all smartphone shipments worldwide. Just how bad are the losses for Nokia? The company recorded a market share of 38.1 percent during the same time period last year. That's since shrunk to 15.2 percent, putting the handset producer in a solid third place behind Samsung's 17.5 percent smartphone market share. The loss ends Nokia's 15-year reign as the world's top smartphone vendor, according to research firm Strategy Analytics. And it's also done a number on Nokia's stock price– down 47 percent this year alone as the company struggles to compete against both iOS and Android.

Although Samsung took second in total smartphone shipments for the second quarter of 2011, at 19.2 percent, the company actually recorded a higher year-to-year growth in smartphone shipments than even mighty Apple. Year-to-year shipment growth for Apple jumped from 8.4 percent to 11.9 percent between Q2 2010 and Q2 2011. Samsung, however, rocketed from 3.1 percent of all worldwide smartphone shipments to 16.1 percent – thanks, in part, to healthy sales of the company's Galaxy S2 smartphone.

The same growth spike can be seen on Samsung's global market share as well. First-place Apple may have jumped from 13.5 percent to 18.5 percent to capture the lead, but Samsung rose from a scant five percent to 17.5 percent over a single year's worth of time.

"Samsung is breathing down Nokia's neck," said Neil Mawston, an analyst at Strategy Analytics. "An unexciting touch-phone portfolio, inventory correction, wavering demand for the Symbian platform and limited presence in the huge U.S. market continued to weigh on Nokia's near-term performance."

In total, year-to-year smartphone shipments worldwide grew 76 percent to a total of 110 million units: Apple shipped 20.3 million, Samsung shipped 19.2 million, and Nokia shipped 16.7 million.

Apple iPad, Day 8: Managing Contacts on the iPad

One of the most important functions of my PC is to store and manage my contacts. Today for 30 Days With the iPad, I want to take a look at the tools available, and see if the iPad has what it takes to tackle this critical task.

The default option, of course, is the Contacts app in iOS. Populating the Contacts is simple--I just set my iPad to sync contact data from Microsoft Outlook on my PC when I sync the device in iTunes. Voila!

The iPad needs a solid contact manager if it wants to be my primary computing device.The Contacts app displays an alphabetical list of all contacts on the left. The details for the currently selected contact are shown on the right, and basically include the standard phone numbers, email addresses, and mailing address.

The app lets you add a photo to the entry so you can easily identify people. It is also possible to do more with Contacts, like add a person's instant messaging info, birthdate, or other relevant dates, but it is not obvious. When you edit a contact there is a field labeled "add field", and it is behind this generic label that you can add more details.

The Contacts app on the iPad is probably fine for most people. Just sync it with Outlook, or Google Contacts, or whatever you've been using to manage the people in your life, and you will have the basic information with you on the iPad. I need something more robust, though. I don't just want a list of names and phone numbers, I want a way to organize and manage different groups of contacts.

In theory, you can group contacts--family, customers, co-workers, etc.-- to make it easier to search for specific people. However, that function apparently doesn't work in iOS 4 if you are using Exchange or Google. If you use a Mac, there may be a way to add or edit groups on the PC, but I don't have a Mac, and I am trying to use the iPad as a replacement for my PC anyway, so solutions that require the PC are not valid for this experiment.

I checked out Bento. Bento is much more than an iPad address book, and I like the app in general--but I don't really like the Address Book function. It is very similar to the iOS Contacts app in look and feel, with the addition of default fields for those tidbits of information like birthdate that require some digging in Contacts. Bento doesn't have the FaceTime button to initiate a video chat directly from the contact entry, though, so it is actually a little less functional than the iPad Contacts app.

For users who also have the Mac OS X version of Bento, the Bento iPad app is nice because it keeps everything in sync. Overall, though, I don't see any compelling reason to choose this over the iPad Contacts app, and it still doesn't deliver the features I am looking for.

Apple Doesn't Need a Cheaper iPhone

You can't deny the smashing success Apple has had with the iconic iPhone. Since it was launched in 2007, more than 100 million iPhones have been sold and the revolutionary device now accounts for about 40% of Apple's sales. But Google (Nasdaq: GOOG ) has caught and passed Apple in the number of cell phones running its operating system and is adding 500,000 devices per day to its ranks. That has some Apple watchers calling for a cheaper iPhone to compete with free (with a contract) Android phones. Should Apple listen?

Above the fray
Apple's history of sticking with the premium product is mixed. In the 1980s, adhering to a closed system and high margins let Microsoft (Nasdaq:MSFT IBM, NYSE: IBM get the upper hand in the PC race. But recently, the premium product is what has differentiated Mac in the PC market and has led to its success. Likewise, when netbooks were all the rage, Apple stayed away from the price-sensitive products and instead worked on the iPad, which revolutionized the industry.

With the iPod, Apple expanded a successful product into the Shuffle, Mini, Nano, and Touch varieties that cover any price range consumers may need. That's the model Apple would probably follow if it wanted to reach beyond its current base.

But the answer of what to do with the iPhone depends on how Apple could make the product less expensive without ruining the experience. You can’t just shrink an iPhone, reduce the size of the screen, and have a hit the way Apple did with the iPod Mini. The iPhone is all about a superior experience, and any "dumbing down" may bring in more buyers, but they may not be happy with their experience.

Of course, Apple already sells the iPhone 3G for $49 with a contract through AT&T. Verizon doesn't have that option because the 3GS doesn't work on its network, although newer models could be made available at reduced costs.

But remember that one of the reasons the iPod model worked was that Apple essentially replaced the iPod with the iPhone, so it never became a commodity business based primarily on price. Apple gets on a slippery slope if it starts trying to make every consumer price point happy with iPhones.

Increasing sales volume has never been the only goal of Steve Jobs or Apple; instead, they've had success sticking with "delighting their customers." Unless Apple has some magic trick up its sleeve (and it might), I hope it doesn't stoop to making a dumbed-down iPhone

While perusing the code for iOS 5 beta 2, the members of the iPhone Dev Team discovered Apple is putting measures into place to make it more difficult for iOS 5 users to rollback to earlier versions of iOS.

It isn’t uncommon for more advanced users to want to try out the latest non-jailbroken software and then revert back to an earlier version so that they can take advantage of their jailbroken features. The current workaround is for users to backup their SHSH blobs before upgrading the software. This ensures that an older version of the OS and firmware can be restored at a later time.

With iOS 5, Apple is changing the way that the blobs are created. The blobs will be regenerated every time a device is rebooted, meaning that simply having an old version of the key around won’t allow users to install an older version of the software.

While this doesn’t prevent groups like the iPhone Dev Team from finding exploits and providing tools so that users can jailbreak their devices, it might make keeping a device in a jailbroken state more difficult.

With iOS 5, Apple will also be looking at doing over-the-air OS upgrades, meaning that the software can update itself without needing to connect with iTunes. In theory, this means that Apple could push out small updates to patch exploits, preventing a user who has agreed to install said update from jailbreaking their device.

On its blog, the Dev Team doesn’t sound overly concerned about what this means for jailbreaking in general but does note that Apple has “stepped up their game” when it comes to locking down the OS. We’re sure the cat-and-mouse game will continue.
